THE FEAR THAT STARES AT ME ...

Now allow yours truly to remind you that I LOVE the manga GUNNM. I LOVE the OVAs (I am sad they did not make more in THAT style... or simply adapt the whole Manga in THAT style. Yes, I keep repeating "THAT style" because THAT style is THAT beautiful and fitting. As ethereal as a Cyborg Mermaid...).  I read in 2 days all 9 volumes AND I could not die before I finish it ! And then the ending... that ending [link]
You have to bear in mind that us Tunisians are NOT much into mechas or robots (except if they are part of ensembles or tear fleshy ones in pieces...), so THIS title really took me by surprise. Another example is PLUTO...which unfortunately did NOT get adapted despite being HOW a re-imagining or re-telling MUST  be done ! Said love however does NOT extend to GUNNM:LAST ORDER which, while a feast for the eyes, does not have a PATCH on the original. No Sir ! No Ma'am ! NOT A PATCH. Last Order is boring and drags its fucking feet For fucking EVER !

The issue at hand ladies and gents is that apparantly they decided to make a live-action movie. NOT a good idea. Okay, it worked with "Ghost in the Shell" because that thing BARELY has a fucking plot or memorable characters (yes I am talking about BOTH the Oshi anime AND the ScarJo flick. And before anyone busts my balls with DA DEEP DEPTH, don't bother, I heard it all...). Unlike its manga which barely had a plot BUT had okay and fun enough characters (and porn but that will remain wishful thinking on my part...). Point is, I fucking watched both GITS and they're pretty much even-matched and even annoying on their own rights...

But GUNNM ? The plot has well-defined arcs and twists and turns. You wanna do it justice ? Animate it. Hell the OVAs did a fantastic job with the little they had (naysayers can blow me...) as the manga was only 3 volumes in AND only ONE complete arc. So people should fucking count their blessing. The point IS: I don't really see alive movie, which is an ADDITIONAL constraint by the way, do better !

Look at her ! Ain't she the cutest little gal ? That's how you capture the term "adorable" in a frame ! Plus she has the voice of Véronique Soufflet (look I watched it in French and that voice stuck in my brain. It was more than fitting !). She is an extremely reassuring presence in a damn hellhole (at least in the first 5 volumes) grows up and then comes to the conclusion that even in a cruel world, a sense of right, hope and kindness is still necessary (mostly in the latter 4). And Goddamn does she suffer through it all ! Man her story is a fucking tease throughout.   

This is the trailer for the upcoming movie that James Cameron wanted to make for decades (yo Jimmy, how about you give that cash to that studio who made the OVAs OR another animation studio that is available and have them get the best animator money can buy so that they adapt all 9 volumes in 9 hours of glorious visuals and sounds... Just an idea ...) and that will be directed by Roberto Rodriguez ( Hey 'Berto ! And Sin City ? Hell and Back ? Get on it NOW !).

Now of course the first obvious reaction would be THE EYES ! DEAR LORD ! WTF WITH THE EYES ! THEY ARE EATING MY SOUL ! HEEEELP !
Sorry, I meant errr.. THIS IS GALLY ?! What version of her Cyborg body is this ?! Nightmare fuel edition ? I mean what the hell ?!
Did I miss something ? I mean in the manga and OAVs she stands out before she's purely reassuring and pleasant as 80% of the population looks like Hank Henshaw's scrap tool box . HERE ? When the supposedly adorable protagonist is scarier than Ed Skrein ( he plays Zapan ? Interesting. People never give him enough credit for his performance as Ajax, but I'll say it; his scenes are the best fucking thing in THAT movie....and no, not too hopeful for the sequel I'm afraid...). Most of the time, Cartoons should REMAIN Cartoons ! That way you facilitate things for yourself and please the target audience.... well ok, just ease it for yourself and please me. I have no idea what they like....
 Why the fuck are the Grotesque characters (like Groot, Deadpool, Apocalypse and the like...) made bland looking rather than uncomfortable and freaky to look at, while the genuinely cute and heart-warming ones seem to have come from Mr Sinister's hangovers ? WHY ?
