Hello boys & girls , today is rather special since I , your incredibly lazy bum of a host decided to write something (amazing! isn't it ?)!
This is kind of an Old Vs New but specially about the characters mostly because because I don't quite have the wit of any Agony Booth or TGWTG or Cinemassacre critic.
Anyway prepare for a look full of subjectivity! Of course both shows have done many things right. TAS gave us Polaris, Strong guy, Bishop, Shard & Cable (WHO ARE FRIGGIN AWESOME, Naysayers go to hell!) & villains such as the phalanx, Purple man, Fabian "A-hole" Cortez, Sinister & the Nasty Boys (ah, Christopher Britton & his Sexy, sexy voice...Sinister is just pure delight to hear...) while Evo gave us a likeable & believable Kitty Pryde (that's a feat on itself!), X-23 (that Marjorie Liu made great...), The perfect incarnation of Boom-Boom (Tabitha is so overdue for a spotlight !), Magma,Sunspot, Spyke (basically an anti-thesis to Marrow), Moonstar & villains like Mesmero, Viper & Gauntlet. And needles to say I love both ! Now let's bring it on folks !
PROF X (Charles Xavier)
Both are very similar to their comic book counterpart (or I'd say more likeable nowadays seeing how Marvel did everything to make Chuck look like a dickweed, Fuck Deadly genesis...) Both are still somewhat secretive, if only for the protection of their students. TAS Prof had the advantage to actually die in the last episode (showing that season 5 had at least 5 good episodes...), EVO Prof had the honour to become a horseman making Jean fight him. The EVO one has the advantage to be voiced by David Kayes .
Has been seriously toned down in violence and appeared more as a "gruff uncle" type character. And it works for both ! Both of them do not hog the screen for themselves (Can't say that for the Whoreverine on the other hand) TAS Wolvie has the advantage to undergo a great character development & some of the funniest lines throughout the entire show while maintaining an aggressive edge . EVO Wolvie know is however how I see finally fully developped Logan, he seems more level-headed but is still prone to anger. Both are extremely well-voiced but I'll say Cal Dodd is just unbeatable. Hell even if in my fics I'm leaning towards the EVO characterization, I still vote for the king who had Jubilee with him.
STORM (Ororo Munroe)
In both series, Storm is claustrophobic so they got that right. While Storm is one of the X-Men's most popular and recognizable female members, she plays a smaller role in X-Men: Evolution & is used as a teacher (good move if you ask me ...) & has the better costume of the 2. However, TAS Ororo has the Tolkien speech that makes her recognisable & I love confident hamminess. So yeah it's settled...
BEAST (Hank McCoy)
Beast is similar to his comic counterpart in most ways (before fucking CAt-beast debacle of course...), though the Evolution version speaks more casually. The EVO a gym coach and chemistry teacher before his latent transformation into the apelike Beast could no longer be controlled with the medications he had formulated upon first learning of his mutation. The TAS Beast ,on the other hand , does not really give an explanation about his transformation but has the most emotional arc of the 2 when it comes to dealing the situation, and coining "Fascinating" as a catchphrase is still better than "My Stars & garters" , Rather Close But I'll choose anyway...
TAS Scott is an authoritarian law giver as well as a no nonsense leader but is definitely likeable & badass in his own right (some of his situations are a riot to watch sometimes), he is the designated adult & that's his concept. EVO Scott is less stiff and possesses a more open sense of humor. While the other students tend to look up to him, his competitive nature and closely held temper will get in the way at times. And in many ways , EVO Scott represents the ultimate expression of the character's development through all the tasks & hardships he went through (That includes the way I see how comics Scott must be developped ).Although you have to admit, both these Cyclops, the AOA one & 80-90's Comics should team up & repeatedly bash the nuts of the fraud we have today...
The thing is, TAS Jean needs to wait at least the end of the 2nd season + DP saga to have actual character development. On the other hand the EVO one smart, athletic, beautiful, well-liked, and the second-in-command after Cyclops. In a way she's the cool big sis. However, she is more insecure and possesses a jealous streak when it comes to Scott (Well they nailed that Jean has more or less the flaws of Donald Duck.) Therefore Since day one she has been established & we've let the show roll it's kind of a no-brainer here .
NIGHTCRAWLER (Kurt Wagner)
TAS Kurt appears as a monk for 2 episodes , he's polite charming & has the knack of being overly optimistic & forgiving. However EVO Nightcrawler takes the cake . He may not be openly religious but he retains the fun & care-free personna that is the core concept of the dude. Insecure about fitting in But never showing and compensated for it with excessive goofiness . Anyway The PERFECT Nightcrawler would be the fusion of both takes
ROGUE (Anna Marie)
Many say that EVO Rogue is too distant from the classic one but I just disagree.
Both are rebellious, stubborn, agressive with a great deal of angst with respect to their powers (although in both cases, they , which keep her from ever safely touching anyone. yet good-hearted & sensible.Sure, EVO Rogue, is a reclusive, paranoid goth BUT she compensates for that by kicking ass & taking names. The 2 first seasons make for a really interesting evolution which deserves to be celebrated. However , I'll go with TAS Rogue. She was literally an outcast that HAD to become a terrorist & once she discovered what she did to Miss Marvel , ended up deeply regretting it. Also , her pairing with Gambit here IS HOW YOU WRITE THAT RELATIONSHIP ! Finally, Lenore Zann , Baybay!
I prefer rebellious young adult Bobby to Kid Bobby, I know, I'm a Jerk...
CANNONBALL (Sam Guthrie)
EVO Sam is Bobby's more practical-minded friend. He also deserves mention for nearly beating Wolverine in a motorbike race, though his urge to "go Cannonball" ruined his chances. You have no idea how I craved for Cable to appear so that we could their father/son bond , Anyway...
JUBILEE (Jubilation Lee)
Unlike the original show, plays a minor role (unfortunately. I'd pay for having Emma Frost , Chamber, Synch, Monet, Husk & Skin to appear in EVO...) She retains the playfulness of her comic counterpart. TAS Jubes is pretty cool & actually made me a fan of Wolverine (Yes I'm that weird...) but neither is as great as hothead Lobdell/Faerber/Hama/Nicieza/Wood Jubilee! Comics version wins !
Yep ! she was in both so...
Cute kid in EVO isn't he ? PAD would be proud !
MYSTIQUE (Raven Darkholme)
Now TAS Raven seems like the most sympathetic one of the 2, her line about being distrusted even among mutants explains a lot her curse as a shapeshifer. To her advantage all her ties with Graydon Creed, Kurt & Rogue are here. EVO Raven has however, been far more resilient, recurrent & vicious. She also has a fierce and dangerous temper, and often throws (deadly) tantrums when she is annoyed, most often when dealing with Toad.Besides her relationship with Irene is here, which implicitely means...
AVALANCHE (Lance Alvers/ Rictor is that You ?)
Okay look guys, I like TAS Avalanche but the EVO one is Rictor that hasn't met Shatterstar
. So here it is...
Always a bully with a big mouth and a small brain. Evo Blob seems to hide a sensitive side (as seen by the rather obsessive way he treated Jean in the first episode he appeared, and his later closeness to the rest of the Brotherhood). However TAS Blob defeated Storm with a Tutti Frutti Ice Cream , that demands respect...
TOAD(Todd Tolanski/ Mortimer Toynbee)
,Like his comic book counterpart, is a weak, smart mouthed, and weaselly punk with extremely poor hygiene (resulting in, among other things, very noticeable body odor) with a wise guy attitude. He seems to revel in his own weirdness with a self-deprecating humor and feigned over-confidence which makes the guy highly sympathetic & relatable. While Toad is really nothing more a coward at heart with absolutely no fighting skill and is mostly useless in battle, he still tries. He is seen in a more heroic role when he nearly gets killed by Magneto when he saves his love interest Scarlet Witch from him. In many ways, this is the mark of a strong character!
QUICKSILVER (Pietro Maximoff)
EVO Quicksilver is a self-serving jerk who will betray his friends and even family to save himself. He is loyal to his father, Magneto, only out of convenience. Though he has a hand in betraying his sister Wanda, and is initially afraid of her temper and power, he grows to care for his sister as the series progresses.
TAS Pietro is more or less a jerk but a more bearable one.
SCARLET WITCH (Wanda Maximoff)
EVO Wanda is the sympathetic of the 2. Locked up in an asylum by her father, Magneto, due to his inability to control her powerful mutant ability, she grew bitter and vengeful against the world (could you blame her?). She was released from imprisonment by Mystique, who sought to use her in her own revenge against Magneto. Wanda spent much of her introductory series searching for her father, eventually finding and attempting to kill him. So in many ways you expect any incarnation of Wanda to do that to Magnus
MAGNETO (Erik Magnus Lehnsherr)
Both versions are powerful mutant supremacists. Both have the tragic past down. However, it now depends on how you view your Magnus. The TAS Magnus is the Claremont depiction with (thankfully) a distilled dialogue & has the better voice of the 2. He doesn't seem to be that interested in antagonising Xavier (he just follows his plan...) & punks Wolverine nonstop. EVO Magnus on the other hand is the toned down Lobdell Magneto. This one is more of a manipulator than a terrorist. His interest in mutant dominance is far more explicit & he has no qualms pulling interesting dickish moves. To the credits of both, they at least knew when to stop hogging the screen for themselves & neither had the dumb idea to snort cocaine or join the x-men as a member...
GAMBIT (Remy LeBeau)
The tougher nut to friggin crack! Both depiction are a blueprint to how Remy must be written. Both show the strengthes of the character as an anti-hero or as the shadiest team member. TAS Remy is maybe the silver medal when it comes to funny lines (sorry, but Logan wins this with the turkey quote); While TAS Gambit is shown to have a cocky bravado personality, he still has a strong sense of honor and devout loyalty to those he considers family .EVO Gambit is not that different. He is an amoral hired thief that works for the highest (don't be shocked , it's a fundamental part of Gambit's concept) & is begrudgingly faithful to his family. Evo Remy does have the better costume but TAS Gambit has the coolest voice (go Chris Potters!). Now since the best Gambit ever written is the Nicieza one...
SABRETOOTH (Victor Creed)
EVO Creed is a violent brawler who has a deep enmity against Wolverine, but not the psychotic killer of the comics (such a shame). Now I may prefer his voice & his coated design & like the fact he is used as an opportunistic merc, I still think TAS has the more assholish Sabretooth. TAS Victor may be toned down, he's still doing anything to flip off Wolverine, takes pleasure in that & hides a vicious, manipulative mind behind a brutish exterior.
Not to mention his encounter with Graydon in front of his house, great ! That's closer to the ideal Sabretooth.
COLOSSUS (Piotr Rasputin)
Now Colossus has really 2 takes only, Kind giant (TAS) or kindest acolyte (EVO). He's not the most complicated guy in the bunch but I'll side with TAS Piotr for actually making me laugh.
Other than that both take credit in not having the creeeepy relationship with
PYRO (St.John Allerdyce)
Both Pyros are fucking hilarious , the TAS one gets credit for pissing off both Rogue & Cable in the same episode (that's quite a feat) & is best bud with Avalanche. The EVO one is a mad pyromaniac with a cackling laugh and a broken Australian accent. TAS Pyro was more controlled, whereas the EVO one has a fuckload of fun burning the world down.
Pffft ; I'm getting lazy, TAS & you know why!
Angel (Warren Worthington)
Now EVO Angel is the early Warren version. He donned a costume and a mask to perform heroic deeds in New York City kind of like the one in early comics did. Both multi-millionaire, but TAS Warren not only became Archangel but played big parts in some of the best episodes written. He also met Psylocke, that's good for him.
TAS Forge is pretty cool but then again I always loved Mr Repairman. EVO Forge however in great contrast to his comic counterpart, is a Bayville High student and mutant inventor from the late 1970s who was trapped in a pocket dimension he called "Middleverse" for several years. Only when Nightcrawler found his way there and the X-Men found a way to free him did Forge return, though he was, as he put it, "twenty years late for curfew." And I yell HOLY SHIT MAN, What are you gonna do ? Had the series gone longer , I wouldn't mind EVO Forge appearing more.
Cyclops' brother. Long believed to be dead, EVO Alex (who was adopted by the Masters family rather than the Blanding family as his comic counterpart was) is reunited with his brother Scott, though Alex has come under the influence of Magneto, leading Scott away from the X-Men. Eventually, they both discover that Magneto has tricked them and help put an end to his plans.TAS Havok is more or less a cameo & strongly HINTS they are brothers (could have been used in future episodes...)
JUGGERNAUT (Cain Marko)
Look, EVO Juggernaut has the coolest costume & is indeed a powerhouse, but there's no need to compare him to the vastly superior TAS One. That one was such a tough entertainig prick that you can only be amused when seeing him trashing the entire team with his sarcasm & Mystique.
OMEGA RED (Arkady Rossovich)
Kind of like Juggernaut. EVO Omega is one of Viper's underlings, he has a previous history with Wolverine that is hinted . He is depicted as working alongside HYDRA as part of a deal to get revenge on Wolverine for something the Weapon X program did. Sure he's resistant & keeps lashing at Logan & X-23 the entire time but he's nothing compared to Len Doncheff's Red. TAS Omega Red is a demon in battle , we're talking about a mutant turned into a weapon & developping an ambition on his own & that's what he did in the 2 episodes he appeared in made him a memorable foe that made anyone worried when they heard about his return, hell Wolverine even avoids this guy. Current writers better study this rather than spitting on this villain.
APOCALYPSE ( En Sabah Nur)
The greatest x-men villain is used at his paroxysm in both series . EVO Apocalypse has his backstory as En Sabah Nur explained & is seen using the celestial technology at his disposal to become rather godlike (Hence why my redesign is majorly inspired by this design) & try to activate the x-gene in all humans (meaning that if you don't survive said mutation, you fucking die. Survival of the fittest baby...) because it's the right thing to do, so he's not that different from the classic incarnation.
TAS Nur now , appears more ,is closer Simonson' take & has Cable as an enemy but pulls a different stunt everytime. Sure EVO one has the best costume (a cape & it would have been perfect) but TAS has the best fucking quotes ever uttered.John Colicos had the definitive Apocalypse voice, anytime he appeared everyone shuts the fuck up & listens to the Big A making the real star of the show. Now both versions are HOW YOU FUCKING WRITE APOCALYPSE, the more this goes I expect Apoc to start slaughtering the X-writers & editors for the BS plots they put him through & not letting DnA handle him in a cosmic book instead of that Vulcan POS.
& the winner for characters is X-men evolution by an advantage of 2 points, of course I wouldn't mind more seasons from that show. But of course I recommend both shows.
HOO! look at this , We finally ended an article that probably only 2 people will read... Oh Whatever guys & gals , bring on the comments !
