The Man Who Started It ...

Description

Just because I am, like many of you, indebted to Walt in a way or another.
He had not only started what would impact american culture but would also be known worldwide ! Yes I am well aware of the guy's flaws or ego (though I don't hold it against him ;) devilkais.deviantart.com/art/M… )
Yeah , I am well aware of his hatred of unions, tight grip on the animators' creative experiments, and the fact that a lot of his employees called him " The Big Bad Walt " XD .
But he was also a genius that gave us several masterpieces during his lifetime to enjoy and love , whether you're a kid or an adult ! AND HE TOOK RISKS, the most memorable one is that he decided that short cartoons weren't enough and that he would make a feature-length film (the first one being Snow White ... and the gamble worked!). Bear in mind that he was near-bankrupt more often than not during his lifetime until he reached stability in the 50's.

Now while I am grateful for the princesses and the fairy tales ,I am more a fan of Disney comics (that should be ANIMATED ! Yes you'll hear that a lot ...) . And yes , Walter Elias Disney was barely in it as he only co-wrote the first story. To me , Disney's biggest gift is that he had 2 good ideas:
1) The idea of the mouse guy in red shorts with gold buttons with big ears and his pal the pantless duck in a sailor suit (a thousand thanks to Clarence Nash ...)
2) The excellent idea to hand them to the RIGHT creative people both in animation (King, Kinney, Thomson...) and in comics ( Floyd Gottfredson, Al Taliaferro, Carl Barks, Bob Karp ...). Of course you know that these people are my heroes for creating the TRUE Disney universe !

So I will always remember him as the guy who got the ball rolling ... and that is something to be admired .
And hey , a little top 10. The best Disney features made DURING his lifetime:

10) Cinderella (1950)
9) Three Caballeros (1944)
8) Ichabod and Mr Toad (1949)
7) Fantasia (1941)
6) Dumbo (1941)
5) Fun and fancy free (1941)
4) Pinocchio (1940)
3)Alice in Wonderland (1951)
2) Saludos Amigos (1942)
1) Snow White (1937)

Yeah , I guess I was more of a fan of the renaissance Disney movies , like many of you !

Gotta give the man credit, he made one hell of an impact on the world. Like you said, he got the ball rolling, and he took some real risks. That's to be respected.
